Advantages of Recycling Used Cooking Oil and Frying Fat

When they have served their purpose in the kitchen, old frying oils and fats need to be disposed of, but this doesn't mean they are waste. They still contain a high amount of energy, making them a valuable secondary raw material for producing environmentally friendly biodiesel. This is a standardised biofuel used by transport companies in their lorries or blended with a certain legally specified portion of mineral diesel for fuelling cars. This intelligent form of recycling—or better yet, upcycling—of old cooking oil and frying fat into biodiesel helps to avoid waste, sustainably protects the environment, and promotes climate protection by reducing CO2 emissions. Even the residual materials from the recycling process are utilised energetically in a biogas plant and combined heat and power plant. So, from the kitchen to the tank, not a drop is wasted.

The recycling of used cooking oil is carried out by us according to the following process:

1. Collection

The fat contaminated with frying residue and water is collected by our customers in specially designed containers for used fat disposal after cooling. We provide these containers in suitable sizes, ranging from 30-liter drum containers to 1000-liter stainless steel tanks.

2. Pickup

Our drivers will pick up the filled containers from you and transport them for recycling. In exchange, you will receive cleaned and disinfected containers for further collection

3. Heating and coarse sieving

Since solid and semi-solid frying fats are also used for frying besides liquid oils, we first prepare the collected used cooking fats for further recycling. For this purpose, the containers from the gastronomy industry are heated in a heat chamber at approximately 30 °C for over 12 hours. Afterwards, their contents are emptied into a collection basin, where waste and solids such as breadcrumbs or remnants of French fries are sieved out.

4. Separation of water and fat

From the collecting basin, the used fat is pumped into a heated high tank and further heated up to 70°C. At this point, the emulsion separates into water and fat, with the heavier water collecting at the bottom of the tank and the lighter used fat floating on top. The used fat can then be pumped into an insulated storage tank.

5. Utilization of water and residues

The water separated from the fat and the residues are fed to the biogas plant for further utilization.

6. Treated used fat as a new raw material

After this process, the treated used fat has a maximum free fatty acid (FFA) content of 5% and a maximum water content of 2%. It can now either be directly used as fuel in a combined heat and power plant (CHP) for energy generation, or it can be converted into biodiesel as a secondary raw material in a biodiesel refinery. During the esterification process, glycerin is produced as a residue, which is in turn used in a biogas plant for the production of electricity and gas.

FAQ - Important Questions Quickly Answered

Where can you dispose of old cooking oil?

Frying oil disposal for the hospitality industry and other businesses must be done legally through waste disposal companies such as BioService Nord or Altfett-Verwertung West GmbH. As certified waste management companies (EFB), we take responsibility for the proper disposal of your cooking oil, ensuring legal compliance, reliability, and an environmentally friendly, hygienic disposal process.

Private individuals can recycle frying oil easily and for free at a recycling centre using the OckoBOX.

How do you dispose of cooking oil?

For disposing of used cooking oil, frying fat, and frying oil, we provide our business partners with hygienic containers in which the used fat can be collected. We deliver the containers free of charge, and their size is customised to your needs. Frying oil containers range from 30 litres to 1,000 litres.

Households can collect old frying oil and cooking oil in plastic bottles and canisters, and solid used fat in plastic bags. Ideally, disposal should be done via an OckoBOX at a recycling centre.

What does it cost to dispose of frying oil?

Private individuals can drop off old cooking oil and similar products for free at a recycling centre with the OckoBOX (for recycling). Businesses can even receive payment for larger amounts of frying oil – feel free to ask us!

Warning: Improper disposal of frying oil, cooking oil, or cooking fat, such as via the organic waste bin, may result in fines. Depending on the region and quantity, fines can range from €10 to €1,500.

How often should frying fat be changed?

Before disposing of frying oil, the correct use of the fat is essential. There is no universal rule for how often it should be changed. As a guideline, regular frying oil should be disposed of after 10 frying cycles. The frequency of changes also depends on the type of food being fried. The more frozen items are fried, the more often the frying fat needs to be replaced. Even if the fryer is rarely used, the fat should not remain in the fryer for more than six months.

How is frying fat filtered in the hospitality industry?

In the hospitality industry, the quality of frying oil must be continuously monitored. At the slightest sign of quality deterioration, such as food particles floating in the oil, the fat should be replaced or filtered. This is done by using a portable device to suction the hot oil from the fryer and filter it, separating it from particles such as breadcrumbs. The cleaned oil is then mixed with fresh frying oil and returned to the fryer. Disposal is only required after several of these cycles.

What should you do with frying fat?

For disposing of frying oil, it's best to use the OckoBOX at a recycling centre. Liquid frying oil and cooking oil can be collected in plastic bottles or canisters, and solid cooking fat in a plastic bag.

For the hospitality industry, we provide hygienic, tightly sealed containers for collecting frying oil and the like – from 30-litre, 120-litre, or 240-litre clamp ring drums to our OckoBOX and even IBC containers with a capacity of 1,000 litres, including collection.

What happens to old frying fat?

Once frying oil is collected from restaurants, businesses, and industries, and taken over by us, the cooking fat goes through a heating process in several stages. This separates solids like breadcrumbs or food residues from the oil, as well as water from the fat. The result is what’s known as UCO (Used Cooking Oil), a purified frying oil that is processed in refineries into biodiesel or HVO 100 (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil used as an additive or substitute for fossil fuels).

What can you get for old frying fat?

For businesses, restaurants, and industries, we offer a payment of €0.40 per litre of used fat (after deducting 10% for dirt and water) with a minimum delivery of 100 litres (as of 01/10/2024). We invoice you monthly, and payment is made in the month following the disposal of the frying oil.
